Overdoing It

Today the Young Conservatives of Texas protested the ACLU’s war on Christmas. In a somewhat counterintuitive move, they chose to protest this “war” by doing some of the ACLU’s devil work for them, setting up a nativity scene secular temple with a Joseph and Gary, no Jesus, and the pièce de résistance — Stalin, Marx, and Lenin instead of the three wise men. (Clearly, separation between church and state is the first step down the slippery slope of Communism and happy gay people.) It seems to me that, as holidays go, Christmas is practically invincible. There’s no quelling the American capitalist urge. It’s started to encroach on Thanksgiving. If anything, the Christians ought to be much more concerned with the economic takeover of the sacred holiday. JC Penney doesn’t need the ACLU to tell it to decorate with “Happy Holidays” — they’ll do it anyway to avoid alienating the occasional touchy, wealthy secularist.
So I’ve started playing Rock Paper Scissors with my female friends, and most of them started with scissors! I am determined to become a Rock Paper Scissors champion so that I can use it to solve all future disputes. So far, I have been roundly beaten by any woman who doesn’t start with scissors. On the bright side, the “what else you got” tactic has worked every time (twice).
